Maha Shivratri celebration at Sai Dham Canada on Sunday, March 10, 2013

Maha Shivratri 2013 will be celebrated on Sunday, March 10 at Sai Dham Canada throughout the day and the night as this festival is observed for one day and one night. On the festival of Maha Shivaratri, devotees will observe day and night fast and worship Shiva Lingam, to appease Lord Shiva by chanting the sacred Panchakshara mantra“Om Namah Shivaya”. It is believed that the people who fast on this night and offer prayers to Lord Shiva bring good luck into their life. Hindu mythology suggests that the observance of vrat on Maha Shivratri helps one to attain control over the two great forces that afflict man – Rajas guna and Tamas guna. When the devotees observes a fast with discipline and spends the entire day at the feet of Lord Shiva; his/her mind is controlled. Moreover, evils like lust, anger and greed are subdued, thereby, acquiring control over Rajas guna. When he/she wakes vigil through the night of Maha Shivratri; he/she develops the ability to conquer the evils of Tamas guna too. Therefore, Maha Shivratri vrat is significant. At Sai Dham Canada, Maha Shivratri puja will be performed four times during the night. The whole night duration will be divided into four to get four Prahar (प्रहर) to perform Shiva Puja four times. Jaagran (nightlong vigil) will be observed where a large number of devotees will be singing hymns and devotional songs, in praise of Lord Shiva and our beloved Shri Shirdi Sai Baba. The fast will be broken only the next morning, after the nightlong worship and morning kakad aarti by partaking the prasad offered to Lord Shiva and Shri Shirdi Sai Baba.
